Paula Abdul is not a happy camper. Although auditions for the ninth season of American Idol are set to start August 6, the perky and often incomprehensible judge has yet to be signed for another year.
In a statement to The Los Angeles Times, Abdul's manager, David Sonenberg, reports that he has not seen a proposal for a new contract from FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment, the show's production companies. "I find it under these circumstances particularly unusual; I think unnecessarily hurtful," Sonenberg said. "I find it kind of unconscionable and certainly rude and disrespectful that they haven't stepped up and said what they want to do."
Known for her emotional and often confusing critiques of contestants, Abdul has become the judge people love to mock. She's certainly been in the music industry long enough to know what she's talking about, if only she could string the right words together.
For what it's worth, the contestants seem to love her supportive, almost motherly nurturing. But what about the fans? Will they tune in if Paula isn't the soft fluffy middle between the crusty cookies that are Simon and Randy? While the addition of Kara DioGuardi as a judge last season made for some interesting moments, it's doubtful that it would have been nearly as interesting without Abdul.
But fear not, Paula lovers. The fact that Abdul's manager has aired the dirty contract laundry in public is probably a good thing. What better way to get some leverage than to rally public support?
